The Financial Times reports that Apple and 20th Century Fox have inked a deal to offer movie rentals. In order for this development to be meaningful, two things have to happen: I see both as inevitable - it s just a question of timing. Most studios haven t shied away from renting digital movies (see: Amazon Unbox, Xbox 360, CinemaNow, Vudu, etc), the sticking point will be negotiating the revenue split and customer rental terms with Apple.

It is the download limit that matters, at lease with some (most?) cable companies who keep those limits artificially low (e.g. mine, telenet.be: 12GB/mo up+down). As an internet provider they discourage internet movie rentals, because they too offer video downloads (whose volume isn’t counted towards the download limit:) — as well as digital + analog versions of the usual cableTV channels.
Under the arrangement, which is expected to be announced by Apple on Jan. 14, iTunes users can download a copy of Fox latest DVD for 2.99 U.S. dollars from the online iTunes store and can watch them for a limited time.
Apple Inc. reached an agreement with News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox to rent movies through the iTunes online store, the Financial Times said, citing a person familiar with the matter. Fox will offer its latest titles on Cupertino, California- based Apple’s Web site, the person told the newspaper. The deal could be announced Jan. 14 at the Macworld trade show, the Financial Times said. Customers can watch films downloaded from iTunes on video iPods and computers.

Forbes reports that in an application, number 20070291710, filed with the U.S Patent and Trademark Office on December 20, Apple describes the system as a process that places an order and then notifies customers when an order is ready to grab at a pick-up station. One goal, the patent application notes, is to avoid an annoying wait in a long queue if the purchaser arrives before completion of the order.
