“… get out of the AT T contract, unlock the iPhone for any carrier that can support it, and watch the sales go up through the roof!” What great advice. That would of course mean SJ will have to admit that he’s wrong. Not something that happens often at Apple. The deal was great for Apple, great for AT T and lousy for the consumers! Choice of carrier is based (for most of us) on how well a given carrier works in our home area - whether that’s at home or at work or in between.

As anyone who spends lots of quality time with System Profiler knows, each Apple model (MacBook, iMac, etc.) has a different identification string, which changes over time as models are revised. The current MacBook Pros use the string MacBookPro3,1 , but a new MacBookPro4,1 string has been popping up in several places. One instance of the string popped up in the MiniBatteryLogger public logs, and apparently came from an Apple IP address.

During the holiday season, Apple sold 2.3 million iPhones, but to hit its target needs to average 2.5 million in sales each quarter this year. Analysts speculate that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company will have to broaden its carrier base outside the U.S. where it has a 5-year exclusive contract with AT&T.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs unveiled the Air this month at the Macworld conference in San Francisco. The thinness of the notebook was achieved in part by a miniaturized 65-nanometer Core 2 Duo processor that came from Intel’s older Merom line. The processor is 60% smaller than the typical Merom chip and uses less power while delivering comparable speeds. The processor, however, is significantly slower than the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors used in other new notebooks.

At Journyx, we’ve been working on creating some libraries that will let you built apps for emulating different parts of the iPhone, like the home screen and the settings page. While a Web developer can build a page that looks like a native iPhone app, they would have to do it from scratch.

Some customers are grumbling that Apple s new movie rentals service is not compatible with older editions of the iPod. According to Wired, customers have noticed that only iPods released last September or later- the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Classic, and the new-generation Nano- will play the downloaded videos. Even older iPods that are video-compatibile will not run the downloaded content.

While sources at AUO recently indicated that it is the supplier for Apple’s 13.3-inch MacBook Air LED-backlit widescreen panel, rival Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) commented that the company already began volume producing 13.3-inch LED panels last October. Sources at AUO recently indicated that the company is supplying LED-backlit panels for Apple’s latest 13.3-inch slim notebook.

CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple has announced that MacBook Air, the world’s thinnest notebook, is now shipping. MacBook Air measures an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point, while its maximum height of 0.76-inches is less than the thinnest point on competing notebooks. Apple also announced that the new Apple TV software update, which allows users to rent high definition movies directly from their widescreen TVs, is not quite finished.
