Although Apple, Inc. is going to finally allow developers to release approved applications for the iPhone and iPod touch , according to an unconfirmed report the rules for this will be very stringent. After many months of trying to prevent users from installing third-party applications on its smartphone and handheld, the Mac maker is relenting.

I have said it before and I will admit it again. The iPhone is a great consumer phone. It s got a few shortcomings for a business user though. The main issues I have with the iPhone, one of which is why mine collects dust in the guest bathroom, is the lack of push email support. The other major issue I didn t like was the lack of 3rd party application support. This was to be resolved with this SDK, but it looks like Apple might stifle the creativity of developers with some of these limitations.
The Apple iTunes online store is now officially the second biggest music retailer in the US, according to a study by NPD Group reported by Information Week . Only discount retail giant Wal-Mart topped iTunes. The Apple digital music retailer now has more than 50 million customers, boasts a catalog of more than 6 million songs, and has sold more than 4 billion songs.

Senior Carbon Composite Engineer Apple may be making a return to the use of carbon composites in its products, according to a new job listing for an experienced carbon composites engineer. Poised to work at Apple’s Cupertino, California main campus, the engineer would help develop new parts out of carbon and function as the Mac maker’s primary carbon materials expert — including the chief advisor on when and how to use composites in new products.
“Please join us to learn about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features,” said an e-mail sent to members of the media. The invitation-only event will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 10 a.m. on the Apple campus in Cupertino.
