Apple’s new MacBook

The new MacBook is a solid, silver beauty. Cut from a single block of aluminium, the body of Apple s new notebook feels sturdy and sleek. The 13.3-inch MacBook weighs 2.04kg and is a thin 2.41cm. Aesthetically, it scores big. It features the new NVIDIA GeForece 9400M graphics processor, a processor which promises up to five times faster graphics performance than the previous generations of MacBooks.

The LED-backlit display provides an instant-on performance and the cover glass makes graphics look glossy and vivid - a big plus point for those who like to see their photos and videos sharp and vibrant. Another big feature that deserves mention is the glass Multi-Touch trackpad. Apple got rid of the mouse button on the trackpad to make way for more tracking area.

On top of existing Multi-Touch gestures like pinch, rotate and swipe for scrolling through windows and zooming in and out, there are new actions for displaying the desktop or switching between windows. For the non-Mac user, the idea of manipulating what you see on screen with your fingers is fascinating and complex at the same time. To some, it is completely unintuitive. And to others, it is a novelty you could get used to, especially with the increasing prevalence of touch-screen phones.

The starting price of S$2088 could be a disappointment for new users waiting for a sub-$2000 price to switch from PC to Mac. But with the host of strong features and an aesthetically-pleasing build, will the unconverted take the plunge? Stay tuned. Full review coming soon.
