A founding creator in Apple Computer has vented his frustration at the company’s direction for technology implementation of the iPhone. Steve Wozniak, who in the mid-1970s helped to create the Apple I and Apple II, today made a fly-in visit to Sydney, where he made some blunt comments over Apple’s iPhone design and technology.

Wozniak said that Apple’s biggest mistake with the iPhone was to not include 3G technology, used for higher data speed transfer, and compatibility with video and media files across phone networks. “To tell you the truth I was really disappointed when the iPhone was introduced… half the phones in the AT&T store at the time were 3G phones,” Mr Wozniak said.

“I was shocked because Apple is bringing the full internet - full web pages with pictures and everything, and it’s not 3G and I knew that would be a speed detriment.” Wozniak said that he was in the dark over when Apple would introduce a 3G model, which would vastly open up its availability within the Australian market, and also allow it to work faster on video and media transfer.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has previously blamed the lack of 3G support on a battery-life issue, however Wozniak disagreed, saying he was aware of no such issue. “I don’t understand why it would be a battery issue - I get as much life on my 3G phones as I get on my non-3G phones,” he said. Wozniak also had a go at Apple’s new Air laptop design, saying that it was a difficult buy for some professionals because of its lacking features, including hard disk space and external media support.
