The Athens High School Show Choir may soon be on its way to the Big Apple, but not before it comes up with some big money to get there. Show Choir members have held many fund-raisers planned to raise the $10,000 needed to send the group of 10 to New York City. The trip is planned for May 7-11. The group is mostly seniors, and they would love to go to New York before they graduate, AHS Choir Director Kern Railsback said.

Once in New York, the choir will perform at the American Heritage Festival and then attend Broadway musicals. We don t quite know what shows we will see yet, but we have discussed The Color Purple and The Phantom of the Opera, Railsback said. Railsback said the choir hasn t been to New York in four years. The kids have sold desserts and provided baby-sitting for parents who needed to do Christmas shopping, he said. We have many other fund-raisers planned, as well.

This is a lot of money to raise and the more money we raise the less the kids have to pitch in. During its first year of existence, the Show Choir has performed for First State Bank and other business and organizations. We would love to have more places to perform, Railsback said. The class falls at a good time so that we can provide noon entertainment at meetings. We will perform after school, as well. Railsback said the choir will accept donations from anyone who wants to support the choir.
