MADRID - Strong sales of Apple’s iPhone in the United Kingdom are paving the way for the latest - and some would argue coolest - gadget’s arrival here in Spain. The iPhone is a cell phone with an in-built MP3 player and camera, which also comes with the ability to read and send email and surf the internet - and all operated with a highly intuitive tactile screen.
Currently, it is sold tied to just one authorised carrier, and in the United Kingdom, that carrier is O2, which was bought by Spanish telecommunications giant Telef nica in 2006.
Although the head of O2 in the UK, Matthew Key, was unwilling to give sales figures yesterday, he indicated that they “were in line with expectations” since the iPhone went on sale on 9 November, and suggested that the good synergy between the company and Apple would speed up the product’s arrival in Spain, most likely with Telef nica as the carrier.
