Apple changing its spots

When Steve Jobs previewed Tiger during June 2005’s Worldwide Developers Conference, banners around conference hall read: ‘This should keep Redmond busy’… This is despite the fact Macs are now operating on a level playing-field with PC competitors with nippy Intel chips, meaning Apple no longer has to spend marketing dollars combating the so-called megahertz myth.

Published: 8 August2007 08:55 BST Apple’s fourth major event of the year was a bit more understated than the previous ones but provided another glimpse of the company’s view of the personal computer. At an event on Tuesday Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled new iMacs with aluminium and glass exteriors, keeping the rumor mill honest this time. Apple’s iMac is an all-in-one computer where the motherboard sits behind a flat-panel display, in a more streamlined approach to the traditional desktop PC.

The fixed version of QuickTime is release 7.1.5. Along with the fixes, the latest version also includes some functionality improvements, Apple said. The update is available for download from Apple’s website or through the Apple update feature, the company said.

Published: 15 April2004 08:30 BST Aided by continued strong sales of its iPod digital music player, Apple on Wednesday posted second-quarter sales and earnings that topped expectations. For the quarter ended 27 March, the Mac maker said it earned $46m, or 12 cents per share, on revenue of $1.91bn. That compares with earnings of $14m, or 4 cents per share, on revenue of $1.48bn for the same quarter a year earlier. Wednesday’s results included a restructuring charge of $7m.

The company introduced the mini, a budget version of the Macintosh, with a $499 price tag in January. The product, which does not come with a keyboard, mouse or monitor, was hailed at the time as the company’s big foray into mass-market desktop computers after focusing exclusively on luxury goods. The eMac, Apple’s next cheapest computer, starts at $799.

Apple crowns Cook as COO

Apple unveiled a new iPod this week that plays videos . The iconic music player has fuelled Apple’s resurgence in recent years. The company sold about 6.5 million iPods from July through September, about three times as many as in the same period a year ago.

An Apple representative confirmed the move and said John Rubinstein, the senior VP who currently heads all hardware development, will lead the new iPod division. Tim Cook, currently executive VP of worldwide sales and operations, will be in charge of the new Mac division. Also, Tim Bucher, who currently heads Macintosh system development, was tapped to head Mac hardware engineering.

Windows Vista arrived at the party six years late, clutching a bottle of Blue Nun. Apple’s next generation operating system had launched to a chorus of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ way back in 2001. Since then the company has rolled out a new iteration of the OS every 18 months or so, with the next due sometime this spring. User-friendly, elegant, stable and (so far) seemingly invulnerable to viruses, it has a plenty of good qualities.
