In the late 1980s, Apple agreed to license parts of the user interface that appeared in the Lisa and Macintosh computers to Microsoft, which was then working on Windows 1.0. But as Microsoft added more features in Windows 2.0 and later in 3.0, Apple in 1988 filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Microsoft and HP (which at the time was working on an Apple-like skin for Windows called NewWave) to stop them using elements that it used in its Lisa and Macintosh platforms.

Analyst firm Morgan Stanley forecast on Friday that the Mac currently on three percent of desktops could win its way to five percent of desktop sales this year. This was based on a survey of 400 iPod users that found that 19 percent expect to convert from PC to Macintosh. This conversion factor is double that previously expected by analysts, and over three times the six percent effect reported four months ago .
As eager Macintosh developers waited for Steve Jobs to speak, the familiar strains of ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ filled the darkened hall at an Apple Computer conference in June. A buzz arose in the San Francisco hall.
And what else has gone? Well, most of it. “Everyone is going to be asking ‘where did the computer go?’… The entire computer [now] floats in the air,” said Schiller. Apple is aiming for a machine users will be “proud to have in their den, their living room or in the front of small business”.
PowerBook shipments reached a record quarterly high of 195,000, up 93 per cent from a year ago, while the iBook shipped 201,000 units - an 8 per cent increase. Apple’s Power Mac shipped 206,000 units, posting a 30 per cent increase. But its iMac struggled, shipping 227,000 units, down 24 per cent from a year ago.
Some think Apple might have some surprises in store when it releases Leopard, the next version of the Mac OS, and Core Animation, a new graphics technology. There is also some hope because of Boot Camp, software that lets Intel-based Macs run Windows, allowing users to play the latest games the day they’re released”for Windows. But that’s likely only a near-term solution.
Five vulnerabilities released on Monday affect various components of the Mac OS X operating system. The greatest threat is a buffer overflow in the Apple file-sharing system that could allow a remote attacker to take over control of the system.
The $249 iPod Mini was the most anticipated announcement of the show, as rumors of smaller and cheaper players had circulated for weeks. Jobs also said the existing 10GB iPod will be expanded to 15GB while retaining its $299 price tag. Like the older iPods, the Mini will work on Macs and Windows PCs.
Apple is the most successful failure in the business. It can create multi-billion dollar markets from nowhere. It has unrivaled brand recognition, and an extremely strong case for arguing that OS X is the finest desktop operating system in common use. Yet its market share of PC hardware is slipping away. People might aspire to Powerbooks and Mac minis, but they do not buy them. The benchmark that matters is the thickness of the wallet after purchase, and here Apple cannot compete.
The Mac has generally had a reputation for having fewer security issues — and less serious ones than Windows-based machines. However, Apple has recently been criticised for not adequately disclosing the nature of flaws in OS X and for its lack of response to security industry concerns.
