Apple’s Anuj Nayar tells us that the company used to publish all three scores on its site, but highlighted the highway test. Now, the highway test and DVD playback tests are out, and the wireless productivity test is the new default. So looking at Apple’s older numbers is a bit like comparing you-know-what to oranges.

New MacBook & MacBook Pro

And thus I find myself starting another Apple notebook review with a conversation about expectations. For the past couple of years Intel has been on this tick-tock model of CPU releases. Every tock , which happens once a year, Intel introduces a brand new CPU architecture, in this case that d be the 65nm Conroe/Merom based Core 2 Duo CPUs. The “ticks” happen the following year, where performance enhancements are minor but the transistor feature size goes down.

After years of selling movies, iTunes last month added the option of renting them. The service adds a convenient way to watch films on your iPod, iPhone or computer. Though users are likely to find the new feature mostly beneficial, both in terms of cost and ease of use, it does have some disadvantages. Xsan 2 has already been qualified to run on third-party RAID systems, which is only fitting considering the company’s decision to discontinue its own line of Xserve RAID offerings. A company spokesman is quoted here as saying that the Promise VTrak RAID system offers compatible performance at a little more than $1 per GB.

Best Buy runs dry of 15-inch MacBook Pro Retailer Best Buy is no longer stocking any 15-inch MacBook Pro online, according to reader reports. The mid-range 2.4GHz model is listed as “sold out” and therefore unavailable; the base 2.2GHz version is listed as backordered and unavailable for between 1-2 weeks. Additionally, while the 17-inch MacBook Pro remains openly listed and immediately available, neither of the smaller versions are visible from Best Buy’s section for the high-end notebooks.
