How the Woz shaped Apple

The Apple I was developed out of a joint effort to impress computer hobbyists and to realise his ambition of owning his own computer. It was never designed with the aim of selling millions of units. His reasons for co-founding Apple were to continue to design cool and elegant computers and gain peer recognition for doing so. Rumour has it Apple head honcho Steve Jobs tried to woo a top Sony exec over an iTunes union and Microsoft top dog Bill Gates told the Wall Street Journal last week he thought Sony president Kunitake Ando would do well to come out fighting his corner.

Vulnerabilities in the Mac OS X have been rising, leading some experts to note that the Macintosh platform is not impervious to security problems. The vast majority of security vulnerabilities, however, affect computers running Microsoft Windows. Also, attacks on Macs so far have largely been theoretical.

The company has also started a countdown to 1 billion songs sold through the iTunes Music Store. At each 100,000-song interval Apple will award prizes to the buyer of the 100,000th song. The person who buys the 1 billionth song will get a prize package that includes a 20-inch iMac, 10 iPods and a $10,000 iTunes music gift card. Apple also will create a scholarship at a music school in the winner’s name.

Apple unleashes iPod Nano

Motorola is also banking on more sales of its handsets with Apple as a partner. Gartner ranks Motorola as the number two global seller of mobiles behind Nokia, which recently released its own N91 handset. Capable of playing music, the N91 has a colour screen, a camera and 4GB of storage, which can hold about 1,000 songs. Samsung’s SGH i300 and Sony’s Walkman W800 are also similar to Motorola’s Rokr.

In the last five months, Apple has subpoenaed the records of PowerPage and AppleInsider to uncover the identities of three “John Does” who it says leaked the confidential information to the sites. While Apple is not directly suing the two sites, it is focusing its suit against the individuals who leaked the information. In a separate case, Apple is suing the publisher of website ThinkSecret for its role in disclosing Apple’s trade secrets.

Second generation iPod Touch (Credit: CNET Networks/Corinne Schulze) Q: I have a question about what MP3 player I should get. I want a player with video, 8GB (or more) memory, and possibly touch screen. I would prefer it to be pocketable, but that doesn’t matter as much. The two I have found are the second-gen iPod Touch and the Archos 5 . I also found a refurbished first-gen iPod Touch for $60 less than the second-gen.
