When I learned that I’d be part of the Macworld Video production team, I was both excited and more than a bit apprehensive. I was excited because I enjoy working in video, though it never seems I have enough time to do so, and nervous because Apple had recently (with the introduction of iLife ‘08 ) basically killed off my video production tool of choice: iMovie HD .

While professionals wrestle with powerful video editing solutions like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere, Apple gave amateur video enthusiasts a new option on Thursday with the release of Final Cut Express 4 . The latest version of Apple s consumer-level video-editing suite keeps the same simplified interface as its predecessors, and adds more flexibility in handling HD video, access to hundreds of plug-in effects, and the ability to import iMovie projects.
The iMovie integration is cleaner than in the past (Final Cut Express HD could open iMovie HD projects directly), which turns out to be a benefit. Think of iMovie 08 as the place where you store all of your digital footage and cut together a quick rough version of your movie. (Don t get carried away audio clips, titles, Ken Burns effects, cropping, and video adjustments don t carry over, and any transitions are converted to cross dissolves in Final Cut.) Then share the movie as Final Cut XML.
