Apple (AAPL) Joins Ranks Of Top 10 Handset Companies Worldwide Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has become one of the top 10 handset makers in the world. Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) also joined the list in the fourth quarter of 2007. Nokia (NYSE:NOK) remains the leader in the field, with 40.4% of the worldwide market in the fourth quarter up from 36.2% in the same period of 2006. Motorola (NYSE:MOT) was bloodied falling from a 21.5% share in the last quarter of ‘06 to 11.9%.

Deutche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore says thin is in, and Apple shares are about expected to be all the fatter for it. By thin, Mr. Whitmore was referring to Apple s new 13.3 inch MacBook Air, recently introduced at the Macworld conference as the thinnest notebook in the world. A highlight of the show was the MacBook Air which is optimized for wireless use, he wrote in a research note. The MacBook Air complements Apple s NB offeriing and should support robust [notebook] growth.

San Francisco: Apple Inc Chief Executive Steve Jobs took the wraps off a super-slim new laptop at the Macworld trade show on Tuesday, unveiling a personal computer less than an inch thick that turns on the moment it’s opened. Jobs also confirmed the consumer electronics company’s foray into online movie rentals, revealing an alliance with all six major movie studios to offer films over high-speed Internet connections within 30 days after they’re released on DVD.

Apple has unveiled the world’s thinnest notebook at this year’s Macworld exhibition. The new MacBook Air, which is just Вѕ inches thick, runs on a specially adapted Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with a 13.3-inch LED screen and 80GB HDD. The laptop follows the lead of the iPhone, with a multi-touch gesture enabled trackpad, that will allow users to interact with files and applications through different combinations of finger movement on the trackpad.

Last year it was the iPhone, but Apple’s killer product for 2008 remains an open bet in the lead up to the annual US Macworld event this week. It’s time again for serious Mac geeks to travel to San Francisco for Macworld Expo. FILE 2007/The Associated Press Apple chief executive Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone at last year’s Macworld in San Francisco. The Mac faithful have been busy blogging about rumors on what innovations may be coming from Apple this year. I’ve said this before, but it’s my favorite week of the year.

And with the arrival of Microsoft Office 2008, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Bill Gates make his final appearance at a Macworld keynote, whether in person or via video link. Despite the rivalry, Jobs and Gates have a lot of shared history dating back to the Apple II era, and Microsoft was one of the first companies to develop Macintosh software.

In a departure from their operating procedure of most years, Apple this week released new products ahead of the start of Macworld, with the company announcing a new version of the Mac Pro, a week before Steve Jobs keynote. The system is touted as the fastest Mac ever. According to Wired.com, Apple will release an eight-core Mac Pro system, with a new system architecture that delivers twice the performance of its predecessor.
