Sometimes one can wonder if Apple actually comes up with its own ideas or if the rumors become so rampant that the company develops a product from them. Either way, it s almost certain that Steve Jobs will announce an ultraportable Apple laptop but that s not all that s in store. The Apple sub-notebook/ultraportable is said to lack an optical drive but the company will have a slim external optical drive available as an option or could be included with the notebook itself.

Apple will sell rentals of new 20th Century Fox movies in its iTunes Store, according to unnamed sources of the Financial Times . The deal between Apple and the studio, which is to be announced at Macworld next month, will also reportedly allow for rippable digital versions of films to be included on new Fox DVDs, providing a legal way to transfer movies you own to a computer or portable player.
We heard rumors that Apple would be unveiling a new MacBook (or three) next month, but this was largely educated conjecture and there was no way for us to know for sure whether there was any truth to the rumors. Now we know (and knowing is half the battle).
Although the release is confirmed, details on the new models are scarce. It is believed they’ll feature a smaller 13-inch monitor and flash drive space to reduce weight and power consumption, although the internal optical drive may go for the same reasons. Stay tuned for our MacWorld coverage coming January 14-18. The Conference and Expo are at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, with four days of Apple fanpeoples milling about the halls.
The report — which cites only a “person familiar with the situation” — alleges that the deal will follow the pattern of similar rental services, which allow users to download a complete copy of the movie that only lasts for a set amount of time before it becomes unplayable. As an exchange, Fox DVDs will include a copy protected version of the movie that can be transferred to a computer and, ultimately, an iPhone or iPod.
