Instead of using the old 65-nanometer Penryn-class chips, Apple decided to change over to the 45-nanometer Montevina processor, these chips are more advanced. In some cases the new chip boasts the memory, so instead of the old 65-nanometer Penryn-class chips with 2MB or 4MB cache, the new the 45-nanometer Montevina processor, has 3MB or 6MB of cache.

While Apple did drop the price of the lowest-end MacBook yesterday to $999, that model retains the old MacBook architecture and casing. Readers should note, however, that the new entry level MacBook ($999) now ships with a SuperDrive. The previous $1099 MacBook contained only a Combo Drive.

As the dust settles on the launch of Apple’s new laptop range, one thing is becoming clear: if you’re a musician, the new MacBook could be best avoided. It saddens me to say this ‘“ the new machine looks beautiful and has several benefits ‘“ but the lack of a FireWire port is a major bugbear. For me, buying a new MacBook simply wouldn’t be an option, as both my audio interface and digital video camera are FireWire-only devices.

Apple has packed it with more memory - 120GB HDD or 128GB SSD - which is a generous step up from the 80GB HDD and 64GB SSD in the original. The new MacBook Air also offers better graphics too, thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor (also found in the new MacBook) which according to Apple gives it a quadruple boost in graphics performance.
